How does the typical anti-inflammatory shot work?
Using a tiny needle the intralesional cortisone injections are placed inside the cystic acne or another area of concern. The actual injection time is only a few minutes and a noticeable reduction in the size of the pimple, ingrown hair or cyst should be visible within a few hours post – injection.
Who is a good candidate for an acne cortisone injection?
Any patient that has cystic acne that cannot be extracted and has no head. In addition, intralesional cortisone injections can be used to help release trapped ingrown hair. Typical anti – inflammatory injections should not be used on whiteheads.
What are the risks of getting a cortisone shot?
A rare and unlikely side effect can occur if too much cortisone anti – inflammatory product is injected into an area. This could cause post – injection pits or indentation at the injection site but in most instances, it will resolve within a few weeks to several months time. There are no other severe acne complications with this procedure.
Is there downtime after a spot acne treatment?
No. The only recommendation is to avoid applying makeup for a couple of hours and cleanse the area before doing so.
