FAQ’s – Kybella
What is submental fullness?
Submental fullness under the chin (often referred to as a double chin) is a common issue that concerns nearly 68% of adults in the U.S. according to a survey conducted by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery. A double chin often disrupts facial symmetry and results in an unwanted older and heavier look.
Submental fullness affects men and women of all ages and is caused by a variety of issues including weight gain, genetics, and natural aging. It is not limited to individuals who are overweight. Unfortunately, double chins are often extremely resistant to diet and exercise but now with the new cosmetic injectable kybella, we have a solution.
How does Kybella treatment work?
Unlike other facial injection procedures, Kybella is used to target submental fat and improve one’s appearance and profile. It was developed through a synthetic formulation of deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into targeted fat pockets under the chin, Kybella causes the rapid destruction and absorption of fat cells while also preventing future fat accumulation. After treatment, the fat is cleared from the area by the body’s natural metabolic process. Kybella only targets fat cells; all other cells and tissue remain unaffected.
Kybella is indicated for improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe convexity or fullness associated with submental fat in adults. It is geared toward people looking for an improved chin profile.
How is a Kybella treatment performed?
As with most aesthetic treatments a detailed consultation will be done to determine where the injection grid is placed. This allows the practitioner a precise plan for the client’s specific concerns. Kybella injectable treatments are administered to the fat area under the chin through a series of injections.
Most submental area treatments are administered within 30 and 45 minutes including the application of Lidocaine (a topical numbing anesthetic) being used to minimize discomfort.
How many Kybella treatments are required?
Treatment sessions necessary varies on each patient’s characteristics and goals. Most patients experience visible results after the first Kybella treatment session. But for clients with more heaviness in the jawline are multiple treatments will be needed for optimal fat reduction results. Treatment sessions are spaced about 6 to 8 weeks apart.
How long does Kybella last?
Once the full aesthetic response from the skin injection procedures is achieved no further treatments will be required. The fat cells are permanently killed in the treatment area and the skin will be tightened during the healing process.
Who is a good candidate for a Kybella treatment?
Kybella is for the treatment of fat under the chin on any skin type or aged person. Even though it is not designed to treat excess or loose skin, it has shown a tightening effect in the treatment area after the fat is destroyed.
What are the common side effects after a Kybella treatment?
There are no long-term side effects seen after a Kybella treatment. Post-treatment discomfort may include tenderness to the touch, swelling and redness in the area are common. Most of these side effects will subside within a week. Other side effects are rare but can include bruising, numbness, and areas of hardness, all of which resolve easily on their own.
Are Kybella ® injections safe?
As with all injectable cosmetic treatments, having an experienced practitioner providing the service makes all the difference. If kybella ® is injected superficially into the dermis, it can cause skin ulceration. With a detailed treatment plan and an experienced nurse, Kybella is a very safe and effective submandibular area treatment.
How much does Kybella treatment costs?
Kybella treatment costs are dependent on the number of treatments the patient would need to get their desired result. For example, a small neck area would be a single vial, costing $500. The nurse injecting the Kybella will discuss the exact cost specific to your concern.
Is it safe to drive after having the Kybella procedure?
At the Laser Image Company, we treat clients with Kybella from Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach, Torrance, Palos Verdes, Rolling Hills, and Los Angeles and there is no problem for them to drive after the procedure.
