Acne is a condition that affects many of us, about 80-95% have had some acne in their teens and 40-55% of adults are dealing with this unwanted condition.
As any acne sufferer knows, this condition can affect the skin now and years to come. Acne is an inflammatory condition of the skin that can cause permanent skin changes including scarring, hyper-pigmentation, uneven skin tone and uneven skin texture. Acne scarring is just as real as of a concern as the actual acne itself. So what can be done to help minimize acne scars? The answer is Microneedling aka Collagen Induction Therapy treatment!
What is Microneedling aka Collagen Induction Therapy?
Microneedling, or collagen induction therapy (CID), is a technique where a high-powered microneedling device such as the MD Needle Pen is applied to the skin, allowing for puncturing of the dermal layer of the skin.
Puncturing the dermal layer not only helps to break up the scar tissue and adhesions, but also stimulates collagen production as well as improves the collagen framework.
These micro-injuries also stimulates your body’s natural healing process allowing for proper tissue healing. The end result is an improved cellular matrix, improved appearance of acne scarring, and more even skin texture. To help the healing process even more, the use of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is definitely recommended with this treatment.
Does Microneedling hurt?
Microneedling is not painless, therefore a numbing ointment is applied 20-30 minutes before the treatment starts. However, it is a minimally invasive treatment with very little down time. Most patients will have redness on their skin post treatment, which usually subsides in no more than 24 hours. Depending of the severity of the acne scarring, we recommend 3-6 + treatments spaced 4 weeks apart.
