What To Know Before Getting Dermal Filler

“Getting work done” is no longer the secret it once was. But if you are considering going under the knife with surgery or needle, you deserve to be informed. The choice is yours to use a dermal filler to change your look or not. One might say that some people have an obsession with themselves doing to many cosmetic procedures that it looks unnatural. Others are just interested in doing small tweaks here and there, to look like a younger better version of themselves.

Do fillers ruin your face?

The key to looking good and not overdone is to go to a professional cosmetic injector that is experienced with the dermal filler being used and has a clear understanding of facial anatomy. It is always best to go to a cosmetic nurse that looks natural and make sure they listen closely to your concerns and thoroughly explain what they plan to do. These tips will make sure you look natural and a little more rested after the injection treatment.

dermal filler treatment areasWhen should you get facial fillers?

As we age the collagen and elastin in your skin will decrease substantially, and there will be a loss of volume in the fat pads in your tissue. As your face gets thinner, wrinkles will begin to appear as skin laxity occurs. And let’s not forget, gravity also plays a role in this.

There are a lot of different dermal fillers available depending on what area you are looking to enhance and your specific concerns.  Some hyaluronic acid fillers are used more superficially for fine lines while others are soft and used in lips while others are thicker to lift lax skin.

Tell your cosmetic injector what you are looking to accomplish, and what areas are your concern. They are the professionals, and will tell you what is the best option. Everyone is different, so what your friend got or what has the best price, might not be the best option for you. Everyone’s anatomy is unique and we all have different bone structure, skin thickness, volume loss, so let the cosmetic injector inform you on which dermal filler is best.

What to think about before getting dermal filler?

For lip filler for example, what shape are you looking for? Do you want them to be big, small, super plump, super natural, hydrated look, sexy, key hole look, fuller lower lip, even lips and so on.. There are so many different looks you can achieve with the correct filler so bring pictures and communicate your desires and wishes to the injector. She or he will then study your face and ask you questions, so you will not be disappointed with the outcome. It is an art to inject, so let the artist know what you are looking for, so they can sculpt to perfection.

One important thing is to truly decide how big you realistically want your lips. Meaning, think long and hard about whether you really want to go big, more natural look, or just a little shape correction. You never want to make your lips overfilled, and it is easier to start with a little and then come back and add more. If actually get to the point where you made the incorrect choice on the size, the hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved but you already spent the money.

Another thing that you should think about, is to refraining from aspirin, Motrin, Aleve, fish oil, multivitamins and vitamin E for about a week before your appointment. These products can act as a blood thinner and contribute to more bruising the necessary post injection.

Should you bring a photo to the appointment?

Well, the professional jury is out on whether you should bring a photo to your injectable treatment or not. Some injectors like to see a picture and get a better understanding on what you are expecting and some do not. As mentioned earlier, everyone’s anatomy is different and everyone’s face has a different shape. Sometimes the picture of what you would like to achieve are not feasible for the configuration of your face or mouth. Communicate clearly and you will have a beautiful outcome.

Each dermal filler can achieve different outcomes.

Gone are the days when a woman or man, only had collagen as a cosmetic option for filler. Now there are a variety of dermal fillers on the market for all areas of the face. Some are better suited for specific areas of concern and others are more versatile and can be used all over the face. Most fillers on the market today are hyaluronic acid based, which is a substance that occurs naturally in our bodies. Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is highly attracted to water and binds moisture in our skin. This smooth substance is pretty resistant to lumps and bumps, that sometimes was an issue for other wrinkle fillers in the past. All of these dermal fillers stimulate collagen production in the injection area.

dermal filler for lip augmentationWhich dermal filler do I need?

Choosing a type of filler is best left up to the injector based on your need, but the smorgasbord is vast. For example, Juvederm from Allergan, has numerous hyaluronic acid injectables with individual names used for separate treatment areas. Juvederm Ultra, Juvederm Ultra Plus, Vollure, Volbella and Voluma.

Then we have all the Restylane fillers from Galderma. They are also hyaluronic acid based fillers with the same quality, and similar use. Those cosmetic fillers are; Restylane L, Kysse, Refyne, Defyne, Silk and Lyft.

Let’s start with the Juvederm fillers. Juvederm Ultra is for slight to moderate wrinkles, and for reshaping or adding volume to the lips. With Juvederm Ultra Plus you will be able to treat moderate to sever wrinkles, nasolabial folds (line from the nose to the mouth also called smile lines) areas with some volume loss and for a fuller more plump lips. The Juvederm fillers are for someone looking for a youthful, pillowy, voluminous look.

Vollure is a filler for moderate to severe wrinkles and folds, like nasolabial folds, but can also be used for lips for great volume. Vollure last longer than the regular Juvederm, up to 18 months with full correction.

Volbella on the other hand is a filler for someone that would like to correct smokers lines and superficial lines, but will also give a beautiful hydrated and natural look to the lips. This is a good filler for someone that has never had a lip injectable treatment before and wants a hydrated soft lip., and excellent filler for older clients.

And then we have Voluma that is used to give volume to the cheeks. This dermal filler is used for lifting cheek bones, to fill hollow under eyes and rejuvenate hands.

Voluma Facial fillerWhat about the Restylane fillers? Restylane L can be used for nasolabial folds (NLF’s), or smile lines, corner of the mouth, marionettes and lips. This filler will give you naturally looking fullness in the lips so no one will really know. A very nice natural look.

Restylane Kysse is of course for the lips, and the results are amazing! If you want to kiss you should try Kysse. It gives volume but the lips look natural and feel very soft.

Refyne and Defyne are both good for the smile lines, and in areas where the face moves. Refyne is softer then Defyne, and can be used in the lips for a plumper look. Defyne on the other hand can be use for almost everything.  Jaw reshaping, chin, temples, moderate to severe folds and wrinkles etc.

Restylane Silk is similar to Volbella, and is used for the same areas. Silk is a soft filler for the lips, smoker lines and superficial lines.

And then there was Restylane Lyft. Lyft lifts up the tissue, so this filler is amazing for cheeks, deep wrinkles and hands. I would say that Lyft might give a little more definition then what Voluma does.

How much facial filler do I need and what is the cost?

We all see images of women and men with really big lips, but what does it actually take to achieve that? One “cc”, or one syringe is 1/5 of a teaspoon of product, so 1 syringe might not be enough for what you would like to accomplish. The price varies from $550-$900 per syringe depending on what filler is used and needed for the look you are after.

How long do dermal filler results last?

Dermal Filler is not forever. We all wish it was forever, but unfortunately hyaluronic acid fillers only last from 6 months up to 2 years with full correction. Lip fillers usually 6 months to a year. That means that is you loved your initial results, make sure to take plenty of pictures as it does fade over time. As far as anything you can do to prolong the filler, there is really not much since everybody metabolizes differently. If you have great metabolism, and exercise a lot, the filler will also metabolize faster and will not last as long in your body.
