I got an email today from a friend that wanted some advice that I wanted to share with you all. I think a lot of people have this problem/question.
Hey, I need your advise on skin. Since I’m getting older I’m starting to get dark spots and I hate it! I have looked up all kinds of things on the internet but not sure if they are just trying to sell products or if they are being accurate. Any help/advise you can give me would be greatly appreciated.
So, regarding your dark spots, no matter age, skin type or how deep or superficial your spots might be, it is super important to wear SPF 30+ every day and stay out of the sun! I cannot stress that enough. Otherwise they will just get darker.
Here is what you can do to get rid of your spots:
Lightening Cream
Lightening Cream is something that everyone that has a “problem” or concern with brown spots should use. The cream exfoliates the skin and reduces the amount of melanin, thus diminishing the brown spots. If the spots are superficial this single treatment could be enough to get rid of them. You should use the lightening cream a minimum of 6 weeks because that is the skins natural exfoliation cycle that happens all the time. In the beginning the spot(s) may get darker, which is normal as the pigment/melanin will rise to the skin surface, and then flake/slough off gradually. The lightening cream makes your skin more sensitive to the sun so if you do not use an SPF the spots can get worse.
IPL “Photo-Facial” Laser
IPL “Photo-Facial” sometimes called “LimeLight” is an awesome treatment if you have lighter skin and the spots are deeper and need some more power to get rid of. You will use a lightning cream and SPF in conjunction with the laser treatments. The number of the treatments depends on skin type, the depth of the spots and the time the sun damage has been present. Some superficial spots need just one, but the norm is 2-4 treatments every 3 to 4 weeks. It takes around 20-30 minutes depending on what area you are getting treated. The treatment is fairly comfortable and when the pulse of light is delivered, you may feel a mild brief pinching sensation.
Microdermabrasion, Dermaplaning and Peels.
This is something that you could do as well, to lighten up your brown spots, either in conjunction with the laser or by it self. These are exfoliating treatments that will help cell turnover, increase the effectiveness of lightening products and diminish brown spots. They are not as effective as a laser, but a very good alternative.
Good Skin Care Products
Effective products will protect your skin (SPF), lightning the spots and reduce overall sun damage. This is extremely important in the brown spot removal process but you need to be consistently using them.
