If you are seeing bumps on your backside, you are in good company: About 90% of women, and virtually no men, have cellulite. So if you have cellulite, don’t be ashamed. Although there is still no cure for cellulite, it is wise to know what cellulite is and what causes it, in order to prevent or diminish your own.
What is Cellulite?
Cellulite is not a medical condition; it is simply a description of puckered appearance of the skin. Cellulite is fat cells found underneath the top layer of the skin that have been squeezed between bands of connective tissue, or collagen, attaching your muscle to your skin. While the structure of women’s connective tissue is vertical (like mattress springs), men’s collagen is angled, which means that fat cells don’t push through and pucker as much to cause that dimpled appearance.
Cellulite usually develops on the thighs, buttocks and lower abdomen, were we have the fattest tissue, but it can also appear on the breasts, arms and even the nape of the neck.
What Causes Cellulite?
Having cellulite does not mean that you are overweight. Even thin people get cellulite. If you are overweight, however, losing weight may reduce cellulite. As I mentioned before, cellulite is much more common among women then men, and if other women in your family have cellulite, there is a good chance that you will too.
Other factors that cause cellulite and influence how much cellulite you have and how visible it is include:
- Poor diet
- Fad dieting
- Slow metabolism
- Poor circulation
- Lack of physical activity
- Lifestyle factors
- Hormone changes
- Genetics
- Dehydration
- Total body fat

What can we do to Prevent and Diminish the Appearance of Cellulite?
Cellulite isn’t harmful but many people would like to get rid of it because of the way it looks. What can be done individually and at The Laser Image Company to help prevent and reduce the look of cellulite?
A good place to start is if you look at the list above at what causes cellulite, and make some individual changes. I know genetics and hormone changes can be a little difficult to fight but change what you can control. If you sit still too much during the day, get up and move around, take a walk and start exercising to increase circulation. Eat right and drink a lot of water, and don’t chock the body with crazy diets.
At The Laser Image Company we offer Exilis Laser that is FDA approved and uses a combination of ultrasonic waves and radiofrequency to reduce fat, tighten tissue and improve the appearance of cellulite all in the same treatment.
Although many treatments claim to “cure” cellulite, many have been proven ineffective. If you work individually and with outside services you can expect a substantial reduction in the appearance of your cellulite. If you have questions regarding the treatments that we offer, please come in to us at The Laser Image Company for a complimentary consultation.
