Micro needling sounds like an intimidating procedure, no thanks to the word “needle in its name. Yes, numbing cream is involved, but the procedure is minimally-invasive but it comes with a lot of skin-boosting benefits that go beyond a basic facial.
Micro needling is a treatment that is safe for any skin type or color, which makes it a great procedure for clients that have a darker skin complexion benefits those that suffer from acne scarring, uneven skin texture and pigmentation issues. These skin types have been hard to treat in the past, as they can easily get post inflammatory pigmentations and burns when a treatment like IPL or a fractional laser have been used. Microneedling will be the answer for them and for anyone that would like collagen stimulation for a smoother younger looking skin.
So what is micro needling and what do these needles do to your skin?
Micro needling – also known as “Collagen Induction Therapy”- is a treatment the promotes skin rejuvenation. The tiny needles on the micro needling pen that we use called MD Needle Pen, creates small punctures, or controlled injuries, in the skin and that cause the skin to start to create new collagen and elastin. The needle depth is adjusted from 0.25mm – 2.5mm depending on what skin condition you as a client have a concern with.
Your body treats a small wound the same way as a large wound and sends fibroblasts to create more collagen in the affected area. Micro needling will basically trick your skin into thinking it has been wounded, but as a result of this controlled injury we are doing with the needles, we are thickening the skin and improving the texture. Micro needling is an excellent treatment that will benefit acne scars, lines and wrinkles, skin laxity, pigmentation issues, stretch marks and all over a rejuvenation for any aging skin.
So what happens in the treatment room after closing the door.. Well, if you have not had the luck of experience a micro needling treatment yet, this is what is going on.
We start by cleansing the skin, so no makeup or sunscreen is left on the area. After the cleansing photos are taken, this is mandatory as we forget how we look like, even if we look ourselves in the mirror every day. This is also so we can keep track of the gradual results from the first treatment until the last visit.
When the skin is clean and the pictures are taken we will start topical application of numbing cream of the area that will be needled. We massage this in and leave it on for 10-20 minutes. At this time, when the numbing is starting to work, we will go over all the post instructions, even if it is not your first visit it is good to get a reminder of the do’s and don’ts. If PRP is something that will be used in treatment, this is the time when we draw your blood and spin it in the centrifuge as well. PRP is short for Platelet Rich Plasma, this is when we use the platelets from your own blood and reintroduce them in your skin while needling.
When the numbing time is complete, we will remove it and clean your treatment area again, so there is no numbing residue left before starting the needling. Now when the skin is numb and clean, the fun begins! The treatment serum that will be used, a pure hyaluronic acid (HA) or PRP or any other growth factor serum, is now applied on a small area where we will start the needling on you. If you are coming in for a micro needling therapy on your face, we will start in the forehead, as the skin is thinner there and that is a more bony area and those areas have a tendency to be a little more sensitive than other areas.
The micro needling pen, MD Needle Pen, is then passed back and forth in a pattern so we cover the area very thorough. While we are moving the devise back and forth, the needled on the needle cartridge that is attached to the micro needling pen are moving up and down. This up and down motion that creates the micro wounds with pinpoint bleeding, that in turn get the body to create new collagen and elastin but also help the serum(s) get penetrated and needled into the skin. We do this all over the area you are getting treated. Once the procedure is completed we massage in more of the serum(s) used in treatment. These micro injuries will be open for approximately 1 hour after we finish needling, so the more good product absorption we can get to penetrate before they close the better. We sometimes also add a mask/balm on top of the serum, that you will leave on the skin of minimum 1 hour.
When the needling is finished and the serums are massaged in, the treatment is to it end if you are not adding on a peel. If you decided to do the micro needling treatment with a peel, now is the time we add that on your skin. The peel that we use is a tretinoin solution peel (vitamin A) and that peel is not painful when applied. You will then leave with the peel solution on your face and will not remove it until a minimum of 1 hour after you leave the office. When doing a peel directly after a micro needling, you will get 2 treatments in 1. As the skin is open from the needling, the peel will penetrate much deeper than if you would just do a peel in a regular facial treatment.
Who is Micro Needling for?
This treatment is, as mentioned in the beginning, good for almost everyone. I would not treat someone with active acne outbreaks, severe Rosacea or eczema (in the treatment area) but other than that it is safe for all skin colors and skin types. This is because it does not use any heat or light and is totally mechanical. Micro needling is excellent for acne scarring, scars from trauma (except keloid scars) and stretch marks. Also for anyone with aging skin (all of us) that have skin laxity, that would like to tighten their skin. We all know that gravity is not our friend when it comes to aging, as that also creates lines and wrinkles, start doing micro needling and those wrinkles will get smoother and less noticeable for each treatment you get. If you have uneven skin texture, and dreaming about having smooth and even skin, this is the go-to treatment for you. Pigmentation is another condition you can fade with help of needling treatments, in conjunction with lightning creams.
Micro needling is not exclusively for the face, you can needle any part of your body that needs a little TLC and collagen boost. Especially those areas were we as women usually get stretch marks, like legs, stomach or buttock.
How often should you get this AMAZING treatment done? Well it of course depends on the severity of the skin issue you are looking to fix. We recommend doing a treatment of 3-6 treatments, spaced 4-6 weeks apart. For the body 6+ treatments are recommended for best possible result. You can do as many micro needling treatment you would like, as long as you space them out correctly, as too much collagen stimulation can cause the opposite effect. After doing a full series, touch-ups or maintenance treatments should be done every 6 months to once a year.
You do not have to wait to start with micro needling treatments until you see your first wrinkle, as this is a very good preventative treatment. Start rejuvenate your skin in time, with this collagen boosting treatment and the wrinkles and aging skin will definitely stay away much longer than your friends.
