As with most people, I smile many times throughout the day, too many to count. Although it is a sign of happiness, we may not be the most happy when we see the fine lines and wrinkles that our smiles may reveal- especially around our eyes. Not to worry, there are many options for treating those pesky lines as well as preventing them.
Difference between Fine Lines and Wrinkles
Before we know which route is best it may help to know the difference between fine lines and wrinkles. Fine lines are lines that may be caused by the movement of facial muscles when smiling or frowning. They can also be created due to a lack of moisture in the skin. Fine lines are usually not seen while the face is at rest, a wrinkle usually is.
A wrinkle is deeper than a fine line and can be caused by the natural process of ageing, as well as exposure to environmental factors or repetitive facial movements such as smiling, frowning or squinting.
As aging occurs, we lose collagen and elastin. While there is no way to stop the process of aging, we do know how they can be slowed down. Vitamins, anti-oxidants, anti-inflammatory ingredients, exfoliants, water, facials, injectables and facial lasers can help to ease the process.
Fine or superficial lines are easier to treat because they usually take place on the top layer of our skin, the epidermis. Regular monthly facials such as the hydrafacial , dermaplaning, or microdermabrasion will help address the issue and keep your skin hydrated and exfoliated. Exfoliation is a great anti-line prevention/treatment because it helps with cellular turnover, sleuthing off dead stagnant skin as well as allowing better product penetration (hydrating, healing products). Skin Care Regiment
An at home skincare regiment is just as important as professional treatments since we only see you once a month at the office and at home you are treating your skin at least 60 times per month. Cosmedix Purity Clean is a great exfoliating cleanser containing L-lactic acid, peppermint and natural hydrators to thoroughly clean the skin without feeling stripped of our essential oils. Cosmedix Pure C is a must for any skincare routine because of its multi-purpose factors. It is essential in collagen production- fighting off fine lines, a potent antioxidant, helps treat hyper pigmentation and assists in sun protection when added to sunscreens.
Laser Genesis Treatments
Genesis laser treatment is also a great option for fine lines as well as redness and hyper pigmentation giving your skin an overall rejuvenation. It has no down time and can be done before a special event to give your skin a great glow or on a lunch break. It helps to stimulate collagen which in turn helps to treat the fine lines. For best results treatments once a month are recommended.
Botox
Botox can be both preventative and treatment for fine lines and wrinkles. Starting Botox before a wrinkle has formed can help to prolong the formation of that particular wrinkle by not allowing our face to activate that muscle. When starting in the prevention stage of lines, it requires less Botox. Having no down time or recovery, this can also be done during a lunch break. Since Botox lasts 3-4 months, only a few treatments per year may be needed. Mild to severe lines can be treated with Botox making it an ideal anti-aging treatment for many patients.
Dermal Fillers
Injectable facial fillers such as Radiesse, Juvederm, Restylane and Voluma are also options to fill in wrinkles as well as add volume to the face. They work by filling the folds and creases. Dermal fillers can fill anything from the superficial lines and wrinkles esp. around our lips to the deeper more profound lines. Depending on which filler you choose results last from six months to two years.
