So I wanted to give you the low down on what the difference is between Botox and Dermal fillers. It can be confusing if you are not familiar with the cosmetic industry and it doesn’t help that glamor magazines write about them with no knowledge and often with a negative tone.
I see this mostly in gossip magazines, what different celebrities have had done and what not to do. “Don’t get this” and “Don’t get that”, ”She is looking to fake” and so on…
Here is an explanation of what they are and how they work.
What is Botox and how does it work?
Botulinum toxin, is a natural, purified protein that is used to temporarily relax facial muscles that cause lines and wrinkles. It can also be used to treat medical conditions such as migraines and hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating). Botox is the original and best-known brand name and the most tested product on the market.
In the cosmetic industry Botox is primarily used for reduction of fine lines and wrinkles. Botox is injected into muscles and the frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines) and crows feet wrinkles around the side of the eyes soften. Botox is also used to relax the platysma bands, those protruding neck muscles we start to see as we get older.
What does the treatment involve?
While there is no real downtime associated with this treatment, but you may get some slight bruising and swelling directly after treatment, due to the needle. To reduce the bruising and swelling, we always give our clients an ice pack to numb the area the nurse will inject which will be applied after the injection is finished as well. You can put makeup on directly after if necessary.
In short about Botox
Botox temporarily relax facial muscles that cause lines and wrinkles and soften those lines caused by facial expression. Botox is not permanent, but last between 3 to 6 months depending upon the person.
What are Dermal Fillers and how do they work?
As we age, the natural collagen and elastin in the skin lessens, as cells lose their ability to produce more of their youthful components. The skin becomes dryer, thinner with less elasticity. When we are born, we have plentiful amounts of Hyaluronic Acid (HA) in our body, but as we get older this store of HA diminishes, leaving the skin less supported, and so lines and wrinkles develop. Dermal fillers are used to add that volume back and thus lift and smooth targeted folds and wrinkles. Facial Filler can make a difference to a person’s appearance, giving them a more youthful and fresher look.
In short about Dermal fillers
Dermal fillers do exactly what the name say they fill the dermis (skin) where there are wrinkles, lines or hollowness. Dermal fillers are not permanent, but can last up to 2 years!
The treatment of wrinkles with dermal filler will involve injecting this naturally occurring product (HA) through a tiny needle into the areas of the face with decreased volume. The procedure is fast, usually around 30 minutes, you see instant results, it leaves no scars and the discomfort is minimal. Dermal fillers like Voluma, Juvederm, Restylane, and RHA can be used to treat different areas of your face, from fine lines, to moderate and sever wrinkles. You can get a full liquid facelift with treatment with these dermal fillers. New volume in your mid face and cheek bones, reshaping of your nose, more fullness in your lips, diminish the lines around your mouth, reduce the hollowness under your eyes, and more. You name it!
What does the treatment involve?
The procedure takes around 30-45 minutes and the dermal filler lasts between 6-24 months, depending on which you choose to use. With any injectable treatment, you can get some slight bruising or swelling, but really no other down time.
