Can we really get the look of a facelift by injecting facial fillers? What are the filler options and who is a good candidate?
As time passes and we get older the face starts to lose volume, causing skin laxity and wrinkles. Our faces start to get a hollow look around the eyes and the nasolabial folds (lines below the cheeks) become more pronounced. In the past the solution was a little nip and tuck, pull tight the existing skin and cut the excess away. This is still a viable procedure but can facial filler, such as Restylane and Voluma XC give a sagging face a rejuvenated look?
What is the Doctors Take on Facial Fillers?
We asked Dr. Rubaum a facial plastic surgeon and owner of the Laser Image Company, a medical spa specializing in non-invasive cosmetic procedures his thoughts. “facial fillers such as RHA fill the void left by the decrease of facial volume. This hyaluronic acid based filler can be injected in the cheek area, lifting the saggy skin and reducing the appearance of wrinkles. It is an inexpensive treatment that any person can do with minimal downtime.”
Facial fillers such as RHA, Juvederm, or Restylane can be used in the more thinned skin areas. If the eyes have saggy skin or the lips are smaller than a patient would like these fillers can be used to correct this concern. These facial fillers are naturally occurring in our own bodies, draw water to the area where injected, and can be removed very easily if the patient does not like the look.
What Can Patients Expect from Dermal Fillers?
Patients will see immediate change in the areas where injected and can expect results to last from six months to two years. Injections can be a little painful but with the new lidocaine mixed fillers and a topical anesthetic, patients can tolerate the procedure fairly easily. Lips, with the most nerve endings will be the most sensitive. Some bruising and swelling may occur so plan your facial filler facelift with appropriate time to heal.
The use of facial fillers such as Voluma, Juvederm and Restylane give patients an effective alternative to the surgical face lift procedure. These products can’t help with that loose skin below the neck but a laser skin tightening treatment called Refirme is showing promising results.
