What are Growth Factors?

What aging skin really needs are growth factors. Even the use of stem cells in plastic surgery is primarily with the hope that they will become growth factor production cells. The research shows that growth factors have the potential to increase collagen production and improve wound healing, among other benefits. Growth factors are very powerful and are an important part of a comprehensive approach to reverse aged skin.

What are Growth Factors?

growth factor is a naturally occurring substance in our bodies capable of stimulating cellular growth, proliferation, healing, and cellular differentiation. They are important for regulating a variety of cellular processes.

Types of Growth Factors

Most of the research on human growth factors for skin has looked primarily at the issue of wound healing, and at short-term use. Two types important to the aging process are transforming growth factor (TGF) that stimulate collagen production and epidermal growth factor (EGF) which stimulates skin-cell production.

As I mentioned above, growth factors stimulate new collagen formation/production, improve wound healing and repair your skin. But how do they do that you might ask? Growth factors activate the multi potent stem cells already in the skin, tricking them by thinking there has been an injury and new younger tissue should generate. The result is younger-appearing skin!

One of the most challenging problems with growth factors is their stability. Without a stability system, growth factors will fall apart in the bottle or on the skin. Typically, only a fraction of 1% of topically applied growth factors will actually penetrate the skin enough to activate anti-aging pathways. The bio-identical version, most over the counter serums, cannot mimic the three-dimensionality of human cell-derived growth factors and are not effective.

Growth Factors in our Treatments?

To tackle the challenging problem with the stability of growth factors, we use the real thing. We draw blood from you and use your own plasma where the growth factors are in the platelets. This is called PRP – Platelet Rich Plasma.

The PRP therapy with the growth factors can be injected directly into the area we are looking to target. It can also be topically infused into the skin using a microneedle pen to  get Microneedling. We have also use this PRP after a resurfacing laser treatment to promote healing and speed recovery.

The result, collagen stimulating and younger appearing skin!
