What is Dermal Filler?
The majority of dermal fillers including the two most popular brands, Juvederm and Restylane are made of hyaluronic acid, which is a gel-like substance that’s naturally found in the body. Unlike Botox, Dysport or Jeuveau, which can take one to two weeks to start working, the visual effect of fillers can be seen immediately. This is why dermal fillers become an obsession of so many people. 🙂
Where Can You Inject Dermal Filler?
There is a difference between dermal fillers and neuro-toxins(Botox, Dysport, Jeuveau). Neuro-toxins are injected to relax the muscles that enable expressions and movement that cause wrinkles. Dermal fillers are primarily used to enhance areas of the face or body by lifting and filling cheeks, plumping and smoothing lips, and to soften nasolabial folds(smile lines) and marionettes. It can also be used to smooth chin wrinkles, rejuvenate hands, and even fill in deep acne scars. Some injectors also use filler to reshape angles of a patient’s face, including chin augmentation or jawline contouring. Adding volume to specific areas can enhance and even change a person’s profile if desired.
How Long Does Dermal Filler Last?
How long filler lasts depends on what type is injected and what area it’s going into. In general, expect dermal fillers to last anywhere from six months (Volbella) to two years (Voluma). Also, areas with more movement, such as the mouth or lips, will tend to break down filler faster than an area with less movement, such as the cheeks. Dermal fillers also range in their consistency. Those containing more cross-linking, used in the cheek area, have less needed flexibility and will last longer. Lastly, a person’s lifestyle and metabolism can effect the speed at which dermal filler breaks down as well.
All and all, filler is instant gratification, results are immediate and an art form in itself. Patient’s can rest assured they will be happy with results and if for any reason they are not, the dermal filler can be easily dissolved with Vitrase or Hyaluronidase.
