Acne and Pigmentation
We know the list can be long for what not to use when it comes to pregnancy that is why I want to talk about what you CAN use if dealing with stubborn acne or pregnancy mask. This may be a completely new condition or just rolled over from the pre-pregnancy days but we are here to help.
Fight Acne while Pregnant or Nursing
Acne is one of the top problems for women who are pregnant due to the hormonal activity, especially around your mouth and chin.
First cleanse daily to remove any dirt, oil or make-up from the day and the second actually cleanses your skin. Next, when it comes to exfoliating, excessive scrubbing can irritate the skin, causing existing ruptures to get even more inflamed. Avoid gritty exfoliants as well as cleansing tools like scratchy loofahs or scrubbers. Use of a cleansing brush like Clarisonic Pro, is a safe, gentle and effective option.
Sulfur-based products are also great because they absorb excess oil and help to dry out congestion. Azelaic acid is also known to safely treat acne in pregnant or nursing women. Microdermabrasions, uses mechanical exfoliation, and is a great approach due to its effective removal of dead skin without the use of any harsh chemicals. Also adding a nourishing healing mask will help to keep the barrier layer of our skin intact keeping out pesky bacteria.
Melasma or chloasma a.k.a. pregnancy mask are patches of dark, pigmented skin on the face. It is related to pregnancy hormones and sunlight exposure. Although there are no aggressive skin lighteners that are approved for pregnant women, using Azelaic acid has been known to safely treat melasma. Staying out of the sun and using SPF every time you are outdoors will help to keep pigmentation to a minimum and help to protect your skin. A topical vitamin C product helps suppress pigment naturally.
